Despite the whims of nature in the spring and early summer of this year, Moldova will be able to harvest a good harvest of walnuts, it is this export product that brings the republic a good profit, since it is appreciated in European markets.
In Moldova, the forecast for the 2020 walnut harvest has been improved. According to preliminary data, the republic’s farmers will manage to get up to 32 thousand tons of inshell nuts. This figure is a quarter lower than last year. In terms of weight, the shortage of nuts in the current season will amount to up to 3 thousand tons.
Initially, Moldovan producers feared that due to spring frosts and the ensuing long period of heavy rains, the walnut crop failure would exceed 50 percent, but the warm end of June and hot July relatively improved the situation.
Another factor affecting the yield of nuts is the lack of the necessary concentrations of potassium and boron in the soil. For these reasons, even such Moldovan varieties as “Kogalnicanu”, “Calarash” and “Peschansky” show a lower yield than several decades ago.
Many experts believe that the cultivation of walnut crops should be made a strategic direction for the development of the country’s agriculture. Revenue from their overseas supplies is more than $ 100 million per year.
In order to get even more from the export of nuts, it is necessary to popularize Moldovan products, to make nuts grown in the republic a real brand abroad.
Nutritionists note that nuts contain a large amount of potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, selenium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, cobalt, vitamins B1, B2, PP, E, fatty acids, including Omega-3, but not worth forget that, despite the deficiency of amino acids in nut protein, this is a high-calorie product.
In people who regularly consume nuts, the risk of developing coronary heart disease is reduced, and the concentration of cholesterol in the blood also decreases. In addition, they are advised to be included in the diet for people with diabetes.
At the same time, walnuts help in strengthening blood vessels, and amino acids in peanuts help in the fight against aging.
